Bodie Hills Conservation Organizer

Position Summary:

The Organizer works in the communities of Mono County to gather individual, business and political support for the permanent protection of the Bodie Hills. The position may be full or part time depending on the applicant preference.

Bodie Hills Conservation Partnership: The Bodie Hills Conservation Partnership is a coalition of organizations working toward the permanent protection of the Bodie Hills, an American treasure with exceptional scenic, historic and recreational values.  The partnership seeks a healthy, sustainable future for the Bodie Hills that combines conservation and access, honors tradition and promotes the region’s scenic beauty.

Location: Bridgeport or Lee Vining, CA preferred with the possibility of other locations within Mono County

Responsibilities and Activities:

  • Update current Businesses for Bodie supporters about campaign developments. Conduct business outreach to expand the “Businesses for Bodie” list;
  • Attend Chamber of Commerce events;
  • Build and develop long term relationships with tribal members and leadership with traditional homelands in the Bodie Hills;
  • Develop and maintain relationships with ranchers and landowners in the Bodie Hills;
  • Recruit organizations, recreation and faith-based groups to be advocates for the Bodie Hills;
  • Organize and facilitate activist meetings;
  • Maintain an ongoing list of supporters via paper, electronic and online petitions;
  • Attend Bridgeport Resource Advisory Council meetings to track and advocate for the Bodie Hills;
  • Update outreach and educational materials for the press, general public, community leaders and decision makers regarding the Bodie Hills Conservation Partnership;
  • Other activities as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with public lands conservation issues and recreation on public lands;
  • Previous experience and desire to work with indigenious communities;
  • A passion for people and community organizing;
  • Knowledge of Mono County’s rural communities, experience living and working with Mono County communities is a major plus;
  • Ability to coordinate and lead volunteer activists;
  • Have excellent strategic, analytical and communication skills;
  • Have a strong sense of initiative and the ability to work creatively and independently;
  • Multicultural skills; English-Spanish bilingual skills;
  • Ability to work with community members with a variety of interests.

Requirements:

  • Able to work on a computer, including sitting at a desk for extended periods; to read a computer screen; and manual dexterity to operate a keyboard;
  • Able to maintain accurate records and multi-task;
  • Able to communicate concisely and persuasively and be understood by others, both orally and in writing;
  • Able to work some evenings and weekends;
  • Able to travel throughout Mono County via automobile up to 10 days per month. Must have valid State Driver’s license and automobile insurance.

Compensation for the position will be based on qualifications and experience, in the range of $22 to $25 hourly. Depending upon whether employment is full or part time, the position may include health benefits, 401K contribution and paid vacation.
