Sat Sept 13, 2013: Obsidian Quarry tour with BLM Archaeologist Greg Haverstock

Bodie Obsidian

We will join BLM Archaeologist Greg Haverstock and visit one of the most significant sources of obsidian in prehistoric California. Participants will learn about obsidian analyses and how these data are used by archaeologists to reveal prehistoric behavioral patterns. The discussion will include details about the temporal use of the Bodies Hills obsidian source, the spatial distribution of obsidian through trade and travel, geo-chemical variation in obsidian, and obsidian hydration dating. Participants will also become familiar with obsidian tool manufacture, see prehistoric examples of this process, and learn about changes in obsidian use during the Holocene.

This outing is rated as easy, with minimal elevation gain and loss during this outing. Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars, a camera, sun screen, hat, a sack lunch, 2-3 liters of water. Long pants and comfortable hiking shoes are also recommended.

Important info: 2 miles or less walking - No 4WD required, high clearance helpful.

For more information or to register please contact Jeff Hunter at info@bodiehills.org or 423-322-7866. The meeting time and location will be provided upon registration.

Sat/Sun Aug 16 & 17, 2014: Stewardship Project & Optional Campout

Join us on Saturday August 16 as we work to convert barb wire fencing in the Bodie Hills to wildlife friendly "let down" fencing. The project will take place from 9am - 3pm with an option to camp out in the Bodie Hills followed by a hike on Sunday morning Aug 17. This project is a stepping stone that will hopefully lead to the removal of a nearby fence in the Bodie Bowl Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC).
Participants should wear long pants, hiking boots, and sun protection (hat & sunscreen) and bring water and a lunch. We will provide tools, safety glasses and gloves.  Volunteers who work a full day will be rewarded with some cool swag from Patagonia!

The work site requires some hiking in sagebrush country. Participants should be physically fit and expect to work in full sun exposure. The views (from our worksite) of Mono Lake and the Eastern Sierra are incredible, so bring along a camera.

Participants who wish to spend the night should provide their own camping equipment (tent, sleeping bag & pad). Dinner & breakfast will be provided to campers.

For more information or to register please contact Jeff Hunter at info@bodiehills.org or 423-322-7866.
